arrr - me music matey

A great place to get music news is digg/music.

It brings democracy back into the meaning of popular.

I love how the first story is about Canada being the number one "music piracy" nation. Man I really hope people don't buy this crap. I was reading a great post on Geist's blog titled "Music and the Market". It criticizes the CRIAs recent argument that based on a test sample of one song, Canadians pirate more music. How did they get from A to B you wonder? Well they compared the iTunes sales of the song "Hollaback Girl" by Gwen Stefani. Since more Americans downloaded (1 million) the song then Canadians (20,000)- we must be getting the great song illegally (presuming we want it) and so we must pirate more music. The CRIA argues that the song should have been purchased 150,000 times due to their calculations. I love how we are now told what music we should be buying

Hmmm....how about a counter argument? Canadians simply have better taste in music.

update: there is a great new site launched by Terry McBride, the CEO of Cdn label Nettwerk Music who is defending a Texas girl being sued by the RIAA for music downloading. The site is appropriately called "Save the Music Fan" and has a great little video clip interview of Terry on CBC This Hour worth checking out.
